Über Thomas
I am a composer, music theorist, and pianist with over 12 years of teaching experience in both private lessons and group instruction. I am passionate about music education and work hard with my students to help them achieve their goals.
My lessons focus on analysis and compositional technique, leading students to a deeper understanding of how music is constructed and how to create their own work with confidence and clarity. I have helped people build composition portfolios, get through difficult exams, and enter top music programs in Germany and elsewhere.

My lessons are tailored to the individual needs of my students. Whether you are at an advanced level or just starting out, we will focus on your interests and goals. I can help you with things you are already working on, or I can devise a structured course of learning, with practical assignments and clear feedback.
Background:
I have a Master's degree in Composition from the Universität der Künste Berlin, as well as Bachelor's degrees from McGill University, where I majored in both Composition and Music Theory. From 2020-2023, I co-led the Universität der Künste's Intonation seminar, teaching Psychoacoustics and the Mathematics of musical harmony. Before earning my degrees in music, I completed a Bachelor's in Psychology at the University of Victoria.
As a composer, I write music for all combinations of instruments, from solo to full orchestral works and electronic media. I am experienced in a wide variety of musical styles, ranging from historical idioms (e.g., Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, 19th-century Romantic, 20th-century Modernist, etc.), to contemporary music and pop. I have written music for live performance, dance, film, and album recordings.
In addition to my experience with more established traditions, I am also well-versed in the musical possibilities of alternative tuning systems — e.g., just intonation and microtonal temperaments. I've explored this area using software such as REAPER, SPEAR, Melodyne, and Pianoteq — as well as my 280-key Lumatone keyboard — and am happy to share my knowledge in this field with interested students.
Originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, my native language is English. However, I also speak German at C1 level, so our lessons can take place in either language or in a combination of the two.

Perfekt! Studying with Thomas has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Thanks to his guidance I was able to successfully get into music school. His deep knowledge, sharp musical insight, and thoughtful feedback have greatly improved my compositions and compositional skills. Working with him not only strengthened my understanding of music theory but also exposed me to a wide range of musical styles and repertoire, helping me grow significantly as a musician.
Perfekt! Profound and solid knowledge about music theory made accessible by Thomas even to teenagers under 13. Even though you may not like exercising piano repeatedly, but you gonna definitely enjoy the theory lessons with Thomas, since you get to understand this time really, what, how, and why of the pieces you are playing.
Perfekt! Sehr guter Lehrer, geht gut auf den eigenen Wissenstand ein. Die Erklärungen sind auch für nicht Englisch-Muttersprachler gut verständlich. Ein Wechsel zwischen den Sprachen ist kein Problem. Das fachliche Wissen ist sehr gut und ich fühle mich hier mit meinem eigenen kompositorischen Schaffen gut begleitet.
