I'm Erik Markovskii, and frame drums are my deepest specialisation. Among my teachers were Glen Velez, Zohar Fresco and Andrey Tanzu. I've been teaching for more than 15 years and have worked with over 1,000 students.
Bodhrán players: I teach hand-played frame drum technique, which works on a bodhrán too, but not the traditional Irish style.
My background is in psychology and education, and as a composer my theatre music was nominated for the Golden Mask, Russia's national theatre award (Best Composer).

Who the lessons are for:
• Beginners who have never held a frame drum
• Drummers and percussionists adding frame drums to their playing
• Singers and dancers who want to accompany themselves
Traditions we can work on:
• Riq — Arabic classical and popular music: finger technique, jingles, rolls
• Daf — Persian and Sufi tradition: snaps, rolls and the deep daf sound
• Bendir and tar — North African and Middle Eastern frame drums
• Modern frame drum technique in the style of Glen Velez
The basics in every style:
• Strokes and sound control: bass, open and closed tones
• Rhythms of Middle Eastern, Persian, Turkish and Central Asian music, odd meters included
• Playing along with music, accompanying and improvising
Format: one-to-one 60-minute lessons on Zoom, in English or Russian. I'll help you choose your first drum.
The first lesson is free — 30 minutes. We'll play together, and you'll get exercises to practise on your own.
