Über Lina
I am a PhD candidate in linguistics at the University of Cambridge, with five years of teaching experience. I have taught German as a foreign language in Germany, both one-to-one and in intensive group courses, and I have taught undergraduate humanities courses at the Freie Universität Berlin. For four years I also tutored high school students in Germany — in German, both as a school subject for native speakers and as a second language, and in English, French, Spanish and mathematics.
I currently work at Humboldt University Berlin and mediate between international employees in German, English and French.
I hold a Master's degree in Arabic and Hebrew, and I have taken regular classes as a student in more than ten foreign languages, at least a year of each. That means I have sat on the other side of a great many teaching styles and know which of them actually helped. I also founded a free German–Arabic language exchange in Berlin, where I organised weekly sessions and prepared learning material for both languages.
Outside of teaching, I run a charity project against loneliness in Berlin, Germany, organising free events for Germans and internationals to build deeper friendships. I also passionately dance many different styles such as Bachata and Brazilian Zouk. I love talking about philosophy, psychology, history, politics, technology, fitness and other cultures.
I spent years studying Middle Eastern languages — grammar, analysis, language history — and came out of it with one lesson that shapes what I do as a teacher: Learning to analyse a language and to read texts from a textbook will not enable you to use it in real life. Many courses train the first thoroughly and quietly hope the second will follow. I would rather we practise, from the first lessons onwards, the thing you actually want to be able to do. This might be speaking German in everyday interactions with friends, writing emails to colleagues, understanding the newspaper or passing an exam for residency purposes. I would like you to outline your motivation for learning German and I will model my lessons on it.

Hey, I'm Lina, a native German speaker from Berlin. I teach German as a Foreign Language to intermediate and advanced learners, B1 to C2
My teaching rests on five principles:
1. Enjoying our lessons. I do my best to create a low-pressure environment where learning feels like something you look forward to rather than something you get through. Keeping our conversations going is my job, not yours, and I make sure each part of a lesson is actually useful to you. The conversational parts should feel like talking to someone genuinely curious about you and your interests. I will also ask you early on how much correction you want and in what form — some people want every mistake caught, others want to be interrupted only when meaning breaks down.
2. Practising exactly what you will actually do. A coursebook has to assume that everyone needs the same things — one-to-one lessons don't, and that is the real advantage of working this way. If you want to talk to your German friends, we talk. If you have to make business phone calls in German, we make phone calls. If you write professionally or academically, we work on your own texts. That doesn't mean improvising: if you book a series of lessons, I put together a syllabus for you, so you always know what we are working towards and what comes next. We build on the four CEFR skills — reading, listening, speaking and writing — weighted towards the scenarios you personally need most. So we decide together at the start what you are aiming at, and I build the lessons from there.
3. Speaking from the start. Speaking is the part most people put off, because it can feel uncomfortable or exposing — so we start early and keep it central, and it gets easier the more often you do it. Speaking is where grammar stops being a table you memorise and becomes something you reach for without thinking. That shift is one of the best feelings in learning a language. Finding the topics and the questions is my job — and I genuinely enjoy that part, so you never have to worry about running out of things to say.
4. Listening, between our lessons as well. An hour or two a week is not much German, and a language only stops sounding foreign once you have heard a great deal of it. What I suggest is listening often to material only slightly above your current level, so that you follow the sense and pick up new words from the context around them. I am happy to record such material myself, on topics you are actually interested in. And if you like the idea of using AI tools, I can show you how to get much more out of them between our lessons — both for listening and for speaking practice with an AI tutor on the days we don't meet. Entirely optional, and no part of our work together depends on it.
5. Content that genuinely interests you. Popular German coursebooks are designed to give you structure, and they use well-tested methods to train the skills you need for using German in real life. What they cannot do is know you, and they often make Germany look like a country of nothing but Oktoberfest and office talk. I would like to build you a syllabus that covers the communicative functions and grammar expected at your CEFR level, but works with material whose content is genuinely interesting and useful to you. So tell me about your hobbies and your intellectual and cultural interests. That way I can pick out what appeals to you from the coursebooks and expand on it with authentic German material such as online articles and podcasts, adapted to your level where necessary. I can also rewrite drills from the books so that they practise the vocabulary you will actually be using.
