Co-founder and lead producer of the Brazilian production company Dédalo, Rafael produced the short films “Dive”, screened in more than 80 festivals, and recently “Waterfront Memories”, in post-production. His new project, the VR documentary game “Privilege Game Show”, recently received funding from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and starts its production in early 2025. Currently, Rafael teaches as a freelance lecturer at BIMM University Berlin, ifs - Internationale Filmschule Köln and Catalyst - Institute for Creative Technology Berlin.

This course offers an in-depth exploration into the art and science of dramaturgy, focusing on its fundamental concepts (metaphor, character, conflict, turning points, gradation, alternance, adherence and causality), structures (one, two, three, four and five acts, nutshell technique and 8-sequence approach) and how these principles became the basis for the orthodox approach to the Poetics of Screenwriting. In Ian W. Macdonald’s (2013, p. 2) words, “Poetics is not about how to write screenplays; but about understanding the actual practices of how they are written, and the institutions, individuals and beliefs that lie behind them.” Surpassing the structuralist model that shapes most screenwriting manuals, this approach helps the students to address dramaturgical composition in a non-dogmatic spectator-centric way, always recurring to an eclectic source of theories when practice demands it. In other words, this course draws on sources as diverse as: Robert Mckee, Syd Field, Jill Chamberlain, Christopher Vogler (here representing Joseph Campbell), Maureen Murdock, Dan Harmon, John Truby, Blake Snyder, Linda Seger… but also Gustav Freytag, Aristotle and the Kishotenketsu, without escaping a witty visual lesson of Kurt Vonnegut on story structure. In this approach, the similarities between such distinct sources are treated not as a premise, but as a consequence of the application of fundamental dramaturgical concepts, strategies used by authors throughout time to project a desired experience for spectators, whoever they are. As Rancière noted, it is all about a (very) particular historical regime of thought, and in our case, the aesthetic regime of our times and businesses.
